Default The Missing Fishing Gear

The BIG DAY is here...today you go fishing at a secret spot your fishing buddy had told you the pervious week, ...and its rumoured this spot is the exact spot where big daddy fishes hangs out....with a couple of cool females in tandem
well, the cats was actually out of the bag on the account that your pious buddy was drunk...thanks to your generous rounds of free flowing beers.

so you check and recheck your fishing gear, just to make sure you dont forget anything. you are armed to the teeth , yes sir...it rumble time, and you aint taking any chances.

But Wait....are you sure you didn't miss out on something important.....something important call ATTITUDE.
ARE YOU GOING FISHING ARMED WITH THE RIGHT ATTITUDE?...in our language ...the right fishing attitude.

Yup...attitude is one of the most important fishing gear most angler leave home without....the missing fishing gear

so whats the big fuss about this thing call fishing attitude?.....well, it wont mean a thing if you don't have any attitude to begin with, but to those who have , it means everything.

so what is the right fishing attitude?....it depends on who you are, really and how much you respect the fishes and mother nature.
any darn fool could come home with a coleman fill to the brim with fishes..but NOT everyone could release a coleman fill to brim worth of fishes and come home empty handed.

why some anglers are better than the rest , the dude who catches all the fishes, the dude who would out number your catch 3 to 1 anytime anyday...the dude who would beat you hands down each time without fail.

how on earth did he get to be this good?..
......nope! he's not using the latest Winston Boron or a Thomas&Thomas rod nor does he own a Vann Stall or a Bellinger reel....
......and double nope!...he doesnt have a lucky charm rabbit foot hanging around his neck....Elvis style

so really , how did he get to be this good?...he is good for one reason and one reason only...he went fishing with the right attittude....fishing attitude that is.

this is the kinda dude who goes fishing without the added pressure of bringing any fish home, the kind that wouldnt mind if he didnt catch any, the kind who would release his catches because he believe its the right thing to do...not because someone is watching and felt obligated to do so,
the kind that takes only photos and leave only footprints, the kind that love his fishing so much that he thanked the fish after each fight...thats the kind of respect he has for the fishes for he understands without the fishes there will be no fishing to begin with.

Could you be this dude with the right fishing attitude?...if you want to....YES.

just ask yourself this one question...if you could afford a $500 fishing outfit, why then cant you afford to buy a $2 fish at the supermarket if you feel like having fish for dinner?

One thing i would really to mention is.....im a freshwater fish angler from day one, i have never tasted salt nor did i experience any seawater fishing....maybe someday i would like to...maybe.

the first fish i ever caught is a tiny climbing perch on worms with a bamboo pole...and it ended up as dinner....well, that was back in 1976 and i was doing what any 10 year old would do...happy to show mummy what he caught.
My dad was a police officer back then, a strict no nonsense, British era up bringing type of dad...and i swear to God, looking at my dad"s face would be like looking at a tiger straight in the eyes...
but he was seldom at home. away doing his duty...and that leaves me plenty of freedom to roam the old tin mining pools to practice my new found love....fishing, well until dad found out what i was actually doing each day after school....yeah, yeah ,that was a beating to remember.

well ,to make a long story short..,fishing is a life long affair as far as i could remember.
the first fish i ever Release was a brown trout...Release because i was told to do so by the bule who taught me fly fishing. the first time, it was sort like mixed reaction...why on earth do you fish when you end up releasing them? who cares about the depleting fish population...this is England and im a Malaysia, it aint my country anyway.

The first thing i did when i got home to Malaysia was to go fishing at my favorite childhood spot...man, you could catch plenty of big daddy Hampalas on a simple spoon lure there....3 trips later without any strike at all...i was wondering where have all the fishes gone to? are they still there? gone are the usual big water splashes...the Tomans are gone too.
what i did catch was a Midas ...what?...a Midas...how did they get there? and what is a Central American fish doing in a natural Malaysian reservoir???
i realize then depleting fish population and destruction of natural reservoir and lakes is happening in my own back yard ...its not just in the western countries but here in my very own.
surely its easy to blame Progress...but we anglers are also the part of that destruction. it will not be easy to stop Progress, but we anglers will have to play our apart, even though the part we play is a very small one...to the fishes and mother nature it is indeed a very big and important one.
Do not for once think the fishes owned it to us for protecting them...we are guilty as hell for their destruction in the first place...we are now only paying back for what we have done...

A lot of hard work has been done to change the mind set and the thinking of Malaysian anglers, the younger ones are more readily to accept the responsibility of cleaning up the mess we made....its a shame really.

i for one will only release native Malaysian fishes but kill the foreign ones...these foreign fishes do not belong there, they are competing for food with the locals...not only CnR is important...but we must NEVER NEVER EVER release foreign fishes into our local waters...i will personally shoot the person i caught doing so...im dead serious.
if you think you are doing a good deed by releasing your unwanted pet fishes into local waters...THINK TWICE and THINK AGAIN..

what i see in Malaysia today is the result of dedicated hard work....a result that makes one forget all the hard, slow and painfull work to educated anglers....the near impossible is happening....THE FISHES ARE COMING BACK...

As im now living in Indonesia, i will no longer live with that attitude of not caring for fishes in a foreign country..as all fishes are the same and they know no borders.
save what we can , and if each angler save what little they can ...theres gonna be alot of saving overall in the long run.

I DO NOT want to see the day, when i have to take my kids or grandkids to the MUSEUM to catch a glimpse of stuffed Navtive Hampalas...that comes with label below....EXTINCT

Pak Ricky,

Artikel ini bermaksud, anda mesti menanamkan sikap yg tulus & ikhlas dalam diri semasa pergi keluar fishing.
Jgn keluar memancing semata-mata kerana inginkan ikan - jgn terlalu inginkan ikan yg besar², jgn terlalu impikan mahukan fight ikan yg hebat, jgn terlalu obsessed memancing sehingga sanggup berasa iri hati, dengki & menganiaya rakan sendiri & jgn terlalu cepat putus asa.

I had always admire an Englishman...an english gentleman i mean. the fact is his sense of fair play, and its a known fact at times he would give you a 100 pace head start before he shoots you with a Mk3 Lee-Enfield or before setting the dogs out ....a country side fox hunt.

Now when it comes to fishing...theres no gentleman as sporting as an english gentleman. well , after all it was an english gentleman who invited flyfishing..in many ways flyfishing is a sport made for gentlemens.
The way a weightless fly is cast, the way the fish is played and how it was finally released...flyfishing gives the anglers a sense of class, elegant and pride as an elite sportman.
It wouldnt be wrong to say a Flyfisher sits on top of the angler's hierarchy , a class of its own just like an english Lord fishing in his private estate..untouchable.
Gone are the days when flyfishing is a sport for Lords, Earls and Barons
, anyone now can be a flyfisher but the tradition of fairplay lives on ...the moment you hold a fly rod you are expected to carry on the tradition of fairplay and to be among the elite you must live by example.

Flyfishing is not about the amount of fishes you bring home...its all about carrying on the tradition...its about how others will look up to you, so what kind of example will you depart to those who view you as an elite angler?

A gentleman will never in his life betray his sporting partner...the fish, he never kills the fish as its just too easy to kill one....
so the question remains...are you going to lead by example and carry on the flyfishing tradition of fairplay.....or .....are you going to kill some fishes on your next fishing trip?

by reading this thread.. straight away i remember my first C&R which painfull at first but 100ox times sense of relieve and joy to see the fish swim away. But to practice this, you should be ready to shut your ear as others will feel differently. hehehe.... I recalled also a friend who also practice his first C&R and he can't even wiped off his smile a week later. hehehehehehe....

P. Ariel how's the Pond opening today... hope is going well and am ready to revisit again.. heheheh

i think i misunderstood u yesterday. we didn't talk much, as i wondering around the pond yesterday, and you were having a some sort of serious discusion with pak pudjo. how can u be so philosophic just about fishing?. talking about fishing attitude, i learned a lot from 'abah' pak pudjo and 'capt' bobby halim. thanks to them.

one thing i remember when i release my first toman yesterday at ur pond, i felt happy. and i'll be looking forward for another happy feeling when i can release my first peacock, in this case, great chances might be in ur pond again sometime...

in salt water, there are differences, though. when u got kakap merah /red snapper for example, big chances are the snapper won't give u the second chance to fool them. i don't know why, for sure, but that's the fact. if u release one snapper, there will be no biting no more. done. that's it.

but, i agree to most of the rest, we have to have rules for bag limit, or size limit of any fishes we're gonna bring home. other wise, my son or grand children might have to go fishing to the other part of the world, if they can afford to.

have u read the thread that u made on the other side? i wrote some suggestions there.

thanks for the sharing. it is wonderful! i hope my english is not so bad, afterall
ps; i'm not a flyer, and for the time being, won't try it for certain reasons. i'm just another regular angler. minnow? ok, fly? no sir, thank u..

i must admit at times people say im crazy for being over protective and serious about protecting wild fishes. Very few people will agreed with me...at first...but in the end many will see and understand that we anglers are responsible for the destruction of so many wild fish species....the day one release his first fish...he will realize how guilty he was in the past..it will be the day he will no longer think people like me are crazy...he will be like me...
i have killed so many fishes in the past...its only right i spend the rest of my life protecting them.

the reason why i open this pond is to make anglers open their eyes on what is happening..its only thru catch and release that we angler can practise our sport without anyone getting hurt , without any fish getting killed...i just want to get the message across that fishing is a sport that doesnt have to include the lost of any life.

Bos Koerga ...its good to know you feel good about releasing your toman...as i said before when we dont take fish home, we fish with less pressure...without pressure you will fish better...the result will always be better than the last...and this photo is the the prove and your reward....

A place that 'must' visit whenever I happen to visit Jakarta. It's in Jakarta, isn't it ?
My congratulations to your fantastic pond !

When i flip thru any fishing magazine, the photos i hate to see are those with anglers displaying a boat deck of catches..from tiny little kerapus to big daddy snappers. i mean really... how much fish can a person eat? some i know would distribute fishes he cant finish to the neighbourhood...well how macho is that?...
im not really a saltwater angler, never been to sea honestly, and Thank GOD most of the major jungle rivers are not so easily reachable or else the fishes would be wiped clean by these macho anglers.

What will it takes to really make them understand that fishes will not be there forever if the anglers keep on destroying and killing every fish they catch.
By all means take a few if one really insist on it, but do one really have to wipe out the entire population just to fill up his coleman, so he could post photos to potrait a champion angler?
Fishes are here on this Earth long before we humans, and it took only 1 generation to drive many species of fishes to extiction...and the bad news is ... that generation is this one ..that means you and me braders.

IF you love fishing then help to preserve the fishes...without fishes there will be no fishing.

This is Indonesia, the fishes in her territory are citizen of the Republik as well...they have every right as you have to be a part of this country.
