Default Jigging 101 - pemilihan perlengkapan jigging

Cheerss....

Hi

You asked a very broad and big question and I will try to answer.

1 Rod length - between 5.5 to 6.5 feet. Best length is between 5.5 to 6 feet. Why? The stress must be balanced between the fisherman and the fish although the fisherman will feel most of the pain/force when fighting the fish. Therefore, the shorter the rod the better the control of the fight. I have friends who use 4 to 4.5 feet rods and enjoyed them. Older fisherman like me prefer shorter rods.

2 Rod tip action - very fast to fast. This is excellent for jigging as the rod must give the jigs a natural "dance action" when jigging. Slow action rods kill the jig action.

3 Power of the rod - high power needed to lift the fish out of the water and from great depths. Let the rod do the work for you. If you are old like me, then use a high power rod with medium tip action. Beautiful action to lift the fish. You will enjoy this. Younger people prefer fact action tip powerful rods. This is a personal preference. Two excellent rods are Calstar 765L or 760L and Seed DJ 66 A1. They are excellent for catching GTs and Amberjacks at Palabuhan Ratu and Komodo Island. Carpenters are too expensive and too tough for older people.

4 Reel - depending on the depth of the water, the size of the jigs and the size of the fish. At Palabuhan Ratu, use a Stella 8000 or 6000 reel or Dailwa Saltiga 5000 or 4500 reel with 50lbs braided line. Set the drag to 15lbs when using 50 lbs braid. That's enough for most fishes at Palabuhan ratu. If fishing for Yellow Fin, then set the drag at 20lbs

5 Braid - use braid for jigging as you must feel the fish taking your jigs. Use 50 lbs braid as main line with about 6 feet of shock leader of 80 lbs. Don't use heavier main lines (like 65lbs or more) as the fish are not that big. Also a waste of money.

6 Jigs weight - between 150 to 300 gms depending on the current. Faster current, heavier jigs to get it to the bottom fast. The best jigs for Palabuhan Ratu are the Skill and Papa Jigs - very very good.

7 Hooks - owner SJ gold hooks. The size must be bigger than the width of the jig

The best way to learn jigging is to fish with a jigger. Watch to ask questions and learn

Hope this will help you

Take care

Happy fishing

Ding

Let me say that I am very surprised that my private response to help a fellow fisherman has been posted here

I am no expert in jigging. Whilst I am sharing the little I know, I am still learning today. I am sharing to learn. Please share with me too.

Jigging like popping and other forms of fishing is very personal. Due to this, a person must feel comfortable with the selected equipment before a successful jigging trip can result.

Let me share some other observations:

1 Rod Length - you must try out the rod first before buying. In popping, a longer rod is an advantage. That said, the never Carpenter Rods are excellent in that their loading power just before a cast is fantastic. That's why I love Carpenter rods for popping. A 7.5 foot Carpenter popping rod will cast just as far as an 8 foot or even 9 foot rod. That's how good Carpenter popping rods are.

Jigging is the opposite to popping. A shorter length rod is an advantage when fighting a big fish. Try out different length before deciding. Good jigging rods are very expensive. Choose very wisely.

I started jigging with 6.5 feet rods. Now I am using rods below 6 feet to gain a stress advantage on the fish when fighting

2 Power of the rod - again try out different rods to feel the power of the rod and then decide. Younger fishermen love powerful action rods. Older persons prefer a softer rod. Carpenter offers excellent jigging rods but they are very very powerful and they bring up the fish fast. They are too powerful for me today. There are other brands like Seed, Calstar, etc that offer good products. Again, please choose wisely as these rods are expensive.

3 Jigs - there are plenty of different brands in the market. Some perform better than others. The action of the jig is the most important factor as it is this action that produces strikes. Colour is not important when fishing deep at Palabuhan Ratu or at night, action is. Colour catches fishermen, action catches fish. Selecting the correct jigs is very important. Example - amberjacks love long jigs. So fish with a long jigs when tageting amberjacks. Buy the same jigs that successful jiggers are using when targeting different species of fish.

Hope the above helps. They are my personal opinion which could be very different from yours. Please share with me.

I am not an agent or dealer for Carpenter rods, only a user.

Happy fishing.

You could check at Sabre Tackle, Beach rd. for both of the blank rods and the jigs...

Actually you could do it manually (only estimating it, w/o the help of any tool). But if you're not used to it, you could use a 'drag scale'. Drag scale is easily to be found in tackle shop nowadays...

Default Drag Setting

Hi

You can do as suggested by Lodewijk.

You take your reel and mount it onto your rod

Then take the line from the reel and thread it through the guide rings.

Make a loop at the end of your line

Attach this line to a spring scale which has a hook hanger. This spring scale can be obtained from any hardware store or from fishing tackle stores.

Ask some one to hold the scale with the line attached to the hook of the scale

Hold the rod at an angle of 45 degree to the floor. Set your drag.

Then ask this person to slow pull on the scale until the line starts coming out. Read the scale. This is the drag setting. If you want 15 lbs, continue to tighten the drag and repeat the above until you get 15lbs

This is quite easy

Happy fishing
