Thanks a lot, John!
Indeed the Papuan black bass is a very strong if not the strongest fish that swims.According Lefty Kreh the Godfather of flyfishing: "I carried line friction burns on my fingers for two weeks after fighting the Niugini black bass".
You can not fight them the normal way! Like Lefty says,he used 50 pnd class tippet and a heavy shockleader, when you hooked them, backup the boat, hold the line tight and lock up your drag, you cannot pull your rod,or it will busted, just straight the point to the fish! So it has nothing to do with normal fishing!I have never done GT popping but by reading your link-(Caranx,Angler's Pro etc) forums I understand why you need a strong rod & drag!
To keep them from the corals and rocks.
By the way, I just bought a Stella 20000 PG, What type of the Carpenter rods will match my length(1.67m) and weight(70kg)? I am looking for a strong-not heavy rod that can handle even big fish!
It is difficult just to buy from pics.

Hope you can get some heavy mahseer in Kalimantan! Iam looking forward to your trip!!!

Hi Victor ,
Although I have never fished Papuan Black Bass but I know the fish well , they are the giant cousins of mangrove jack which have the same habit of using underwater obstacles to their advantage once hooked . I wud say GT popping technique will work with " NO LINE OUT " drag set which work well on Red Bass , another cousin which lives in the rock/reef strewn
area of the coastal area of the ocean .
Stella 20000FA is a fine reel albeit a bit too heavy for me and I presume for you too , I am an over weight 173 cm @ 83 kg guy and prefer Stella 8000FA which still can produce high enough drag to subdue big GT I have encountered so far which is an even 50 kg . There are several Carpenter rods you should take a look , SP78H SHP if you like stiff rod and DJ83MH if you like forgiving rod or TBL711/35RF if you are in between these 2 ends of the spectrum .
SP78H SHP - 400+ gr. , DJ83MH - 425+ gr. and TBL711/35RF - 420+ gr. , there aren't too much differences in weight , the lightest being SP79M around 380 gr. and the heaviest being WV80XH around 450 gr. .
As for mahseer , the next trip I am going to load PE2.5 line into the spools of my baitcasters and PE3 into the spinning reels , the choise of the outfit wud be the distance we will be casting into the probable places where those mahseers / hampala lurk .
Jon .
I am getting a few Carpenter rods next month , specifically SP78EX-H n SP78H SHP .
