I remember one of my friends, a big guy always doing fishing with big poles,in rain or storm. He went to Martha's Vinyard and saw all those flyfishers catching their fishes, I will never touch that sweeping thing!!
I waited for the right moment to show him some flycasting and now he's addicted! Writes,fly-tier, kayak, etc.
Anyway, have you ever heard about the Nuigini bass? Reputed to be one of world's toughest fighting fish( Papuan black bass), seems great to do a expedition to Irian Barat, perhaps Fishy or Sportfisherman knows more about these kind of bass?
Take care,
Victor.
Hi Victor ,

The famous place for Papuan Black Bass is at Benchbach , near Marauke in the south of the island but on PNG side , there is charter there run by Ozzie but very expensive due to very high cost of internal flights within PNG and the charter itself .

There are 2 main species of these black bass , the dark colored one and the spotted one and I was told the spotted one in the upper reaches of the river is more powerfull than the dark colored one in the lower reaches of the river .

I am not sure if anyone has managed to subdue the black bass of respectable size by using flyfishing technique , I heard horror stories of graphite rods exploded under extreme load , etc. , the standard tackles for papuan black bass is baitcaster filled with 50 lbs minimum
braided line and 100 lbs. leader . Haven't done it myself but was told by a friend living in PNG and have done the trip who is reliable .

If Black bass is anything like Red Bass , I say good luck to you flyfishers because even Red Bass pull harder than GT and in places where snags are all over the fishing ground , I am not sure if you can let the fish to run at all . We catch Red Bass while fishing for GT and we use lock up drag setting , if you let it run and take lines , it will be all over within seconds .

Mind you I am not a flyfisher , I am considering buying a beginner's set which if I don't like it , won't cause heartache to discard and looking at a special offer in BassPro shop right now which comes complete with reel n WFT line @ below US$. 100.- . However I don't think this combo outfit will be able to take on Papuan Black Bass of respectable size , my target is mahseer in the rivers of Borneo .

Returning to Papua province is my dream but it's difficult to get good boat and reliable host , I have been to Biak a number of times and once to Jayapura a long time ago , it was good then because of facilities I can enjoy courtesy my late good friend who was the G.M. of a plywood factory with their own marine transportation facilities ( tugboat , barge , speedboat , etc. ) . Now I don't have that anymore since my friend passed away .

Jon .
