Let me say that I am very surprised that my private response to help a fellow fisherman has been posted here
I am no expert in jigging. Whilst I am sharing the little I know, I am still learning today. I am sharing to learn. Please share with me too.
Jigging like popping and other forms of fishing is very personal. Due to this, a person must feel comfortable with the selected equipment before a successful jigging trip can result.
Let me share some other observations:
1 Rod Length - you must try out the rod first before buying. In popping, a longer rod is an advantage. That said, the never Carpenter Rods are excellent in that their loading power just before a cast is fantastic. That's why I love Carpenter rods for popping. A 7.5 foot Carpenter popping rod will cast just as far as an 8 foot or even 9 foot rod. That's how good Carpenter popping rods are.
Jigging is the opposite to popping. A shorter length rod is an advantage when fighting a big fish. Try out different length before deciding. Good jigging rods are very expensive. Choose very wisely.
I started jigging with 6.5 feet rods. Now I am using rods below 6 feet to gain a stress advantage on the fish when fighting
2 Power of the rod - again try out different rods to feel the power of the rod and then decide. Younger fishermen love powerful action rods. Older persons prefer a softer rod. Carpenter offers excellent jigging rods but they are very very powerful and they bring up the fish fast. They are too powerful for me today. There are other brands like Seed, Calstar, etc that offer good products. Again, please choose wisely as these rods are expensive.
3 Jigs - there are plenty of different brands in the market. Some perform better than others. The action of the jig is the most important factor as it is this action that produces strikes. Colour is not important when fishing deep at Palabuhan Ratu or at night, action is. Colour catches fishermen, action catches fish. Selecting the correct jigs is very important. Example - amberjacks love long jigs. So fish with a long jigs when tageting amberjacks. Buy the same jigs that successful jiggers are using when targeting different species of fish.
Hope the above helps. They are my personal opinion which could be very different from yours. Please share with me.
I am not an agent or dealer for Carpenter rods, only a user.
Happy fishing.
