Hello,
My name is Jim and I just ran across this forum on the web. I am from the U.S. and have been living in Jakarta for the past 8 months. Maaf, saya bisa bicara sedikit bahasa indonesia. I am an avid fly fisher and have been fishing for many years and fly fishing for over 10 years. I would really like to meet some new fishing friends that have experience fishing in and around Indonesia, I am especially keen to discover what saltwater fly fishing opportunities there are in Indonesia.
So far I have only fished (trolling) in Pelabuhan Ratu last february but did not catch any fish.
Does anyone know of a place to do any flats fly fishing....for bonefish or trevally....or any other species I am not familiar with?
From the looks of it there are a few other fly fishers on the board, I would really like to discuss experiences and perhaps plan a trip in the near future.
Looking forward to being a memeber of this board.
Welcome to the forum. Flyfishing is very new in Indonesia so there are only a few flyfisherman here. I'm not a flyfisherman myself, not yet
I think Ujungkulon (Peucang Island, Umang Island) can be apotential fround for flyfishing. Lst month one of our member caught a ot of small trevally in Umang Island, by popper though.

Fishy,
Thanks for the prompt reply to my posting. No problem that fly fishing is new to Indonesia, hopefully we can all learn together....but if there are fish hitting poppers....they will hit flies too! I have done quite a bit of saltwater flats/shallow water fishing and some offshore fishing with flies and have a bunch of gear and all my fly tying stuff with me here in Jakarta. Is there a map of Umang Island somewhere you could point me to?
Thanks again and I look forward to more discussions and hopefully some fishing!

BTW, this sunday we will have a gathering in Ayer Island (just 20 minutes by boat from Jakarta), we already have 84 members confimed to join. You're welcome to join us if you want. Cost is only Rp201.400 per person, including boat transportation and lunch. All you have to do is bring your gear to Marina Ancol. This is the fishing result there http://www.fishyforum.com/t5071/

Thank you for the links. I just got back from a trip to Australia where I caught some golden trevally on a fly...I will post a report in the next few days.
Terimakasih Banyak untuk invitation Sounds like a good time and a good opportunity to meet some fishermen. Have to check with my wife, she may have something planned.
If I can make it what time should I be at Marina Ancol?
Is there an area that you can wade fish (water depth 1-3 feet) around Ayer Island?
Am a beginner for fly fishing and done a few trips myself to place mentioned earlier by Adrianus. only cought a few reef fish not more than 1 kilo though hehehehe with my ownmade flylure.
would be great if you could join the gang on this sunday, where we can meet and have a good talk which i would love to hear from an experience fly fisher.
I'll bring my fly gear #8 but I only have floating line at the moment. when the times is right we can have banded, golden or big eye trevally on small size (not more than 2 kilos each) in the Ayer Island, but most of the time natural bait, minnow and popper is most effective. I've done a few times on fly but none to avail, however sems there will be alot of participant on Sunday so it would be challenging to cast our lure, unless we prepare a few banded in case landed on their head..hahahahahahha..

hope to see u this Sunday

hehe... not to mention rapala as your earrings. take my advice: don't fish near soni. when he got mad (read: cought no fish), he'll pull the minnow out of water with all his mighty power.. and you can imagine what can be happened
hope he'll come as a guest only, not as an angler hahaha..
iye opo iye, son?

Will be at Pier 17 at Marina Ancol at 6am this Sunday.
Look forward to meeting everyone, will be good to finally meet some people who know where and how to fish in Indonesia. Glad to share what I can about fly fishing/casting and fly tying as well.
I will bring my fly rods and don't worry....I will be careful not to hook anyone and will try to fish away from people (wading)....but that may be hard with 84+ people fishing!
well ..it's not you am worried about... it's soni...he will purposelly get in your way and will always follow whereever you go....
in case you still not understand bahasa..if sony mumbling " oomm..omm..minta dong dong oomm??... just ignore him..//hihihiiiihiihihihihihi..just joking.. but be prepare... seeyouat Marina... cheers

snookfly,
Thanks for the note. Not too many places to wade that I have found yet but want to check out karimunjawa and areas around the islands in and around Ujung Kulon....hard part is how to access them.
Would love to hear about the locations with pacific tarpon, caught a bunch of those in Australia....and have fished for their larger cousins several places in the states.
You aren't kidding about this forum, very nice people and lots of info....just need to work on my bahasa.
Cheers,
Jim
